Social media marketing is overwhelming for businesses. That’s why we keep our ear to the ground to keep up with social media changes and trends. Right now, we’re particularly in tune to what’s happening with TikTok and the after-effects of its algorithm changes.
What we love about it? No longer do brands have to be slaves to constant posting throughout the day, vying for a sliver of fleeting attention from fickle followers. Tiktok has made some changes that are based on solid search engine and content development best practices that—frankly—we’re excited to see happen.
Here’s what’s happening with TikTok:
Keyword strategy
TikTok is picking up on keywords in descriptions you use as well as words in your videos. So—it’s super important to research relevant keywords for your industry and niche and make sure you’re using keywords people are actually searching for. Not only is this good for your TikTok video visibility in the short-term, it also means that your TikTok productions will have long-term search value as people continue to search for the terms that are associated with your video—and your video gets shown in the TikTok results.
Trending sounds
TikTockers love sounds and music. You’ve gotta hook people with sound as soon as your video starts. And if it’s a trending sound, even better. Pay attention to what’s trending on TikTok and latch onto it, if appropriate for your brand. People on TikTok are searching for trending sounds and music (e.g., the middle schooler phenomenon of seeking out Electric Light Orchestra songs, which have made an uncanny comeback).
Relevant hashtags
Similar to keywords, but not exactly, hashtags are quick and dirty summarization words and combinations of words related to your content. People are also searching for these and TikTok is serving up what people are searching for. So make sure your hashtags are on point.
Do you have to be a TikTok pro to build a TikTok following? Nope.
And do you have to have a particular kind of business to be on TikTok? Not even.
So many businesses you’d think of as “boring” have made themselves completely relevant—funny and interesting even—because of TikTok.
